Funeral Insurance

What is funeral insurance?

Remove the financial burden for those you leave behind. Funeral insurance is a simple insurance policy which pays a lump sum when you pass away to pay for your funeral.

Acceptance is usually guaranteed for NZ residents or citizens regardless of their health, insurance companies won't ask any medical questions. There are some exceptions with the insurers we work with at LifeDirect, such as providing cover for terminal illness and age restrictions – for example you might not be able to apply with some insurers if you're over 75. The easiest way to check age eligibility is to do a quote on LifeDirect - we'll only show insurers that you are eligible to apply with.

Who is paid?

The funeral cover claim payment is paid to the insurance's policy owner.

What is covered?

For the first two years, insurers will only pay out on death due to accident, other causes of death (like illness) are not covered. If a non-accidental death occurs, the insurer will refund all premium payments paid. After two years, you are also covered for other causes of death. When comparing insurers with LifeDirect, you can see each insurers list of exclusions when you start a quote.

Do premiums increase?

Premiums are designed to stay the same. Most insurers guarantee that you won't end up paying more in premiums.

How much does a funeral usually cost?

According to the Citizens Advice Bureau the average cost of a funeral home, and funeral bills is $8,000-$10,000. However costs vary a lot as they depend on your wishes and factors like where you live.

Who is funeral insurance right for?

A funeral plan is great for people looking for peace of mind, and a simple policy to provide a lump sum to help with funeral costs. It's not suitable if you are looking for life insurance to cover other costs (like a mortgage), this is because the amount you can insure yourself for funeral insurance is usually lower than a life insurance policy. It also may not be suitable for people with enough savings to take care of funeral costs.
