LifeDirect Claim Statistics: Over $51 Million Paid Out to Kiwis

At LifeDirect, our job doesn’t stop when you take out an insurance policy. The real test of insurance is what happens at claim time - and we’re proud to share that from 2020 to 2025, over $51 million has been paid out to LifeDirect customers across more than 2,200 successful claims.

That’s thousands of Kiwis and their families who received financial support when life threw the unexpected their way.

The Big Picture

Between 2020 and 2025, our insurer partners paid:

  • $40.3 million through AIA (2,175 claims)

  • $7.36 million through Asteron (47 claims)

  • $3.66 million through Fidelity (37 claims)

That’s a total of $51.3 million in claims paid out to LifeDirect customers. Behind every number is a real story of a family kept afloat, a recovery made possible, or loved ones supported during a difficult time.

Fidelity Life: Protecting Families Across Life’s Stages

Fidelity paid out $3.66 million across 37 claims, covering:

  • Life & Terminal Illness: $2.98 million (17 claims)

  • Trauma & TPD: $457,000 (9 claims)

  • Income Protection: $226,000 (11 claims)

For Fidelity customers, the biggest share came from life and terminal illness claims - showing just how important life insurance is when families face the hardest of times.

AIA: Covering Everyday Health and Major Events

AIA has been the largest payer by volume and value, with 2,175 claims worth $40.3 million. These included:

  • Death claims: $26.2 million (135 families supported)

  • Medical claims: $7.9 million (1,849 claims) — helping Kiwis access treatment and care quickly

  • Trauma claims: $4.65 million (87 claims)

  • Disability income support: $1.41 million (88 claims)

  • Accident & illness: $85,000 (12 claims)

This shows the breadth of protection AIA provides - from day-to-day health needs through medical cover to major life events like trauma and disability.

Asteron: Supporting Through Serious Health Events

Asteron customers received $7.36 million across 47 claims. Key causes included:

  • Coroner/unspecified causes: $2.62 million (14 claims)

  • Cancers: Over $3 million combined across a range of types including pancreatic, breast, colorectal, and others

  • Heart failure: $481,000 (1 claim)

  • Other illnesses (such as sepsis, organ failure, and glioblastoma): remainder

These figures highlight the reality of critical illness in New Zealand, and the reassurance that cover provides when serious health challenges strike.
